For the last three years of my employment at E&M Consulting, Inc., a national publishing company, I had been working as a senior graphic artist, and association coordinator. In this role, I helped coordinate, and art direct a team of graphic artists, assistants, and admin in the creation of publications including: membership directories, magazines, annual reports, conference, parade of home, and community guides. In directing this team, I honed skills in: importing large masses of data through use of excel, knowledge in writing grep expressions, research into project and workspace efficiency through scripts and workplace training guides. I also laid the foundation of, and grew the digital and interactive versions of the printed publications. I helped modernize, and grow these digital flipbooks to be a better online experience for our partners, advertisers, and general viewers.
E&M needed a Marketing Brochure that they could easily hand out to potential partners at conferences, conventions, etc. This booklet was designed to be simple, stand-out, and air on the side of "I want to learn more, let me reach out"
AIA Kansas has a great eye for artistry in their design awards. The theme of these awards are similar from year to year, but have a unique flair in each edition giving it a fresh look while maintaining the style and branding of AIA. The importance of this design also comes from the award recognition, jury comments, accreditations, and acknowledgements while also showcasing the projects that won each award. This project had some challenges with low resolution images, or shot peculiar angles. So putting this layout together was in a way like putting together a puzzle.
Magazine publications are fun projects to work on. Creating a full publication, with new articles and information while following the style guides to maintain the continuity and feel of a publication that comes out several times a year and should not deviate too far over the years. Arizona has a unique landscape, and include many interesting perks that someone living in Minnesota may not experience. Capturing this unique feeling was key in my design of this cover. Designing the articles within was also a fun adventure in maintaining print specifications, such as page count, bleed, and other pertinent settings. But also including all the information the association is looking to include in their publication.
This directory and chamber guide was also a unique and exciting experience. In that typically each individual process is done separately, such as prepwork, cover, informational content, and directory. I was able to design each of these parts for this publication. This chamber encompasses 4 towns just southwest of Minneapolis, MN. So the design needed to represent not only the chamber as a whole, but also each individual town.
While working with the Nevada contractor’s association (NCA). I had the opportunity to help a new designer put together an award submission for a member of the NCA. We were able to help put together this interactive award submission. They went on to take home honorable mention for outstanding workmanship and innovative solutions low-slope.
While working with the Nevada Contractors Association for their membership directory publications, they had a need for a guide they could bring and hand out to students in high school that they visited during career fairs and other events. It provided information and resources for the reader on the skills, tasks, and the intricacies of each field in the construction industry. It also provided other useful information such as scholarship opportunities. The association had a pretty clear idea on what they needed, but needed our assistance on the creation of the guide itself. They had hand-drawn flowcharts, visions of bold color choice, but without a childish/cartoony feel. I had several meetings with this group and went over several proposal ideas and we were able to refine it to this finished piece.
